Mission 1, Day 78: Focus on the finish line

Today I had no less than 3 people proclaim as they saw me "You've lost alot of weight!"  It got me thinking on a line of thought that didn't belong in my head at the time.  I started thinking about the scale.  I started thinking about numbers.  I lost my focus at that very moment.

Focus is the key to what all of us are trying to do.  You put your eyes on the prize and don't take them off.  At times the prize might become hazy, you might not see it as clearly as at other times, but you have to maintain your focus.

Find a plan that works for you.  Measure your progress.  Make assessments weekly.  Make the changes to your plan to continue pushing yourself towards the prize.  Stop jumping from plan to plan.  Stop changing up your workout plan on a weekly basis.  Every strength training plan needs time to work.  You can't measure your success by what happens in one particular week.  That is a fatal mistake and it amounts to losing focus.

Anything worth doing takes time.  You didn't get out of shape overnight.  It isn't like you sat down and ate a ton of food, went to bed and woke up fat.  You did this to yourself over time.  Why do you expect it to change overnight?

I get that comment quite often. That is how most people measure fitness success is in scale weight loss. people ask me all the time how much weight i've lost. I used to weigh myself nearly every day, i have slowly gotten away from that and maybe weigh myself once a week. I am not nearly obsessive about it as i used to be. however when people ask me i do tell them the scale weight i have "lost"(65lbs), it does make me proud. that is just how most people relate.

      Suzette,

I totally get that people measure fitness in terms of the scale weight.  I also get that losing 65 pounds is something to be proud of.  I agree with using that to tell someone how well you've done.  My point was in relation to the mission we are on.  Using you as an example, you've lost 65 pounds and look incredible, so most people would just be happy with that, but now you are trying to lower your body fat percentage, a number most people have never measured.  My post was aimed at that issue and that one alone--staying focused on our goal.  We are not yet at the finish line so let's not take our focus off that fact.

You HAVE done an incredible job!

you know i did get "comfortable" with my body after losing so much weight. i haven't been this "small" in years. i almost didn't go along with adam in the first 14 day shred. but i knew my bodyfat was not where i wanted it to be. that is why i have kind of abandoned the scale the past months. i think i am more focused now on losing some bodyfat. thanks for all you great thought provoking posts.
