M6:D12 (D490) Don’t have an opinion

What's on my mind today?

My experiences recently have led me to believe that some people, when they become an expert in their field, suddenly feel like it is an attack on them if someone else has an opinion that is contradictory to their own opinion.  I am confused by this attitude because I’ve always felt that it is more important to learn continually than it is to fall in line with everyone else’s opinion.

It is my strong belief that the only way we learn new things is to have an open mind.  This means investigating the opinion of others and respecting their right to think differently than us.  I believe that it is important to protect one’s content, but would only ban someone if they became abusive to me or my customers.  If someone was simply stating their own opinion, I would respect that.  I might even take them to task on their opinion if I believed they were wrong, but I would not ban them for having that different opinion.

Abuse is another story entirely.  If I am running a website with a membership forum and someone is abusing my members, they are going to get banned after a warning.  That part only makes sense.  Nobody wants to be abused, verbally or physically, so I won’t tolerate it on a forum I am running.

With that said, I believe respect for other people’s opinions is of paramount importance.  Never put someone down because their opinion is different from your’s.  Just realize that not everyone will agree and that is ok.
